What We Do

HODC developed buildings in Evanston, Highland Park, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie, Streamwood, Fox River Grove, and Woodstock including both affordable owner-occupied and rental units. These projects would not have been possible without the generous support of our building partners. In addition to housing development, HODC’s program areas include property management, homebuyer counseling, and community education. Our programs are described below.

Housing Development

HODC purchases, develops and rehabs both rental and owner-occupied affordable housing units on our own and through joint ventures with for-profit and nonprofit organizations. HODC also provides affordable housing predevelopment consulting to nonprofit and private entities.

Property Management

HODC manages more than 180 affordable rental units throughout the area. We help link tenants to community services and offer housing options to a number of units to social service agencies. HODC accepts households with Section 8 rental vouchers.

Homebuyer Counseling

HODC conducts seminars and one-on-one counseling sessions on the home-buying process. We provide some foreclosure counseling under certain programs. HODC also partners with local employers to develop employer-assisted housing programs that promote affordable housing options near jobs and help employers retain workers.

Community Education

HODC participates in local, regional and statewide coalitions and campaigns that promote expansion of affordable housing options. Additionally, HODC collaborates with municipalities, employers, community leaders, neighbors, civic & religious organizations, and tenants to build stronger communities. HODC offers affordable housing presentations to organizations and businesses. If you would like an HODC board member or staff to speak to your organization or business about affordable housing, please call us.
