Homebuyer Counseling

Home Buyer Counseling

Becoming a homeowner for the first time can be intimidating for some.  To help people prepare for homeownership, HODC offers group seminars that focus on home buying topics that explain the buying process as well as help you decide if you are ready to become a homeowner. Workshop topics include ownership basics, managing your credit score, and negotiating a home purchase. In addition, we provide one-on-one counseling for those who are interested in more individualized help. Our housing counselor is available to discuss your specific budget and help you through the closing process.

HODC also provides foreclosure counseling services under certain programs. We have participated in the Predatory Lending Database (PLD) program, the Foreclosure Prevention Program (FPP), and Hardest Hit Fund (HFF) program.

In addition, the Illinois Housing Development Authority established the Illinois Foreclosure Prevention Network which includes a website and hotline for those experiencing foreclosure. If you are a homeowner in need of foreclosure assistance, please contact the Network and you will be referred to the nearest agency, which may be us. The website is www.keepyourhomeillinois.org. The phone number is 855-466-6300.

As a HUD-certified housing counseling agency, HODC does not charge for our housing counseling services. To learn more about HODC’s home buyer counseling program, please call our housing counselor.

Employer Assisted Housing

HODC is a member of the Regional Employer-Assisted Collaboration for Housing (REACH), which offers an Employer Assisted Housing program to local employers in cooperation with the Metropolitan Planning Council.  As a designated REACH partner, HODC administers the program on behalf of sponsoring employers, including providing housing counseling to first-time homebuyers and signing documents for employee grants.

REACH helps employers attract and retain employees by providing affordable housing close to work, while offering significant tax incentives to the employer to help offset the costs of the program.  HODC has operated employed assisted housing programs with Northwestern University, the City of Evanston, the City of Highland Park, and other communities.  Please call if you are interested in becoming a business partner in our employer assisted housing program.
