As the back-to-school season approaches, parents and students are busy shopping for school supplies and preparing for the year ahead. But at HODC, we’re focusing on a different kind of foundation for success: stable, affordable housing.

For over 100 children living in our affordable housing communities, a safe and secure home is a launching pad for their potential – both in school and for their futures. Research from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the National Low Income Housing Coalition, and the Urban Institute highlights the critical link between affordable housing and educational outcomes. Here’s why housing matters so much for student success:

Reduced Stress = Better Learning:

When families are burdened by high rent or face the threat of eviction, stress levels skyrocket and can hinder a child’s ability to focus on school. Affordable housing alleviates this pressure, creating a stable environment where children can concentrate on learning and achieving their full potential.

Stability Matters:

Children in stable housing are less likely to experience the disruptions that come with frequent moves, which can derail their education and social development. By ensuring that families have a permanent, affordable place to call home, we help children build lasting connections with their schools, teachers, and peers—key factors in academic success.

Access to Resources:

Affordable housing doesn’t just mean lower rent—it means more money available for essentials that contribute to a child’s education. Families with manageable housing costs can better afford nutritious food, after-school programs, and educational materials, all of which play a crucial role in supporting academic achievement.

A Healthy Environment for Growth:

A safe and well-maintained home is essential for a child’s health and well-being. Quality housing ensures that children grow up in environments free from hazards like pests, poor ventilation, and structural issues, which can negatively impact both their health and their ability to learn.

A Foundation for Lifelong Success:

Research shows that children who grow up in stable, affordable housing are more likely to succeed not just in school, but in life. The benefits of secure housing extend far beyond the classroom, laying the groundwork for higher education, better job prospects, and a brighter future.

At HODC, we’re committed to creating communities where every child has the opportunity to excel. As we gear up for the new school year, you are invited to partner with us in supporting providing safe, affordable housing for families in need and making a profound difference in the lives of children across our communities.
